Global Compact and SDGSDG
What is the United Nations Global Compact?
It is a call for companies to align their strategies and operations with ten universal principles on human rights, labour rights, the environment and the fight against corruption, and to adopt measures that promote the SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG). At present, with over 9,500 companies and 3,000 organisations based in more than 60 countries and more than 70 local networks, the Global Compact is spreading the message that any kind of company anywhere in the world – of all sizes and in all sectors – can play a fundamental role in improving our world.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)?
One of the greatest recent achievements in sustainability was the approval of the 2030 Agenda and, with it, the Sustainable Development Goals. Do you know what they are about and how they came to be? Humanity is facing numerous challenges in ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities in terms of development and well-being. In 2000, the United Nations adopted eight objectives to meet the most pressing needs of the poorest people, the Millennium Development Goals:
- To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- To achieve universal primary education
- To promote gender equality and empower women
- To reduce child mortality
- To improve maternal health
- To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
- To ensure environmental sustainability
- To develop a global partnership for development
From Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals Fifteen years later, 193 Member States of the United Nations approved the 2030 Agenda, which proposes the Sustainable Development Goals – a new horizon with the most important challenges for humanity over the coming years. They consist of 17 ambitious objectives, broken down into 169 goals, that require collaboration between civil society and the public and private sectors, the success of which would lead to a more equal and liveable world.Contact us
